Understanding Muscle and Bone Weakness in the Aging U.S. Population

Image
Age-related musculoskeletal decline is one of the most significant public health challenges facing the older population in the United States. As adults age, the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) frequently coincides with a reduction in bone mineral density (osteopenia and osteoporosis). When these conditions occur together, clinicians refer to the compounding state as osteosarcopenia—a condition that dramatically increases fragility, loss of independence, and fall-related hospitalizations among older Americans. The Biological Link: Sarcopenia & Osteoporosis Muscles and bones operate as an interdependent functional unit. Under mechanostat theory, physical force generated by muscle contraction exerts mechanical tension on bone tissue, signaling osteoblasts (bone-building cells) to maintain bone density. When muscle force wanes, bone remodeling declines as well. Key Mechanisms Behind the Decline | Condition | Biological Mechanism | Clinical Presen...
